It has long been said that people are an organisations
most valuable asset, so why is it that when it comes to training most
organisations deploy this on an as needed basis and it is usually the
first casualty of cutbacks? The answer is that traditional training is
expensive, time consuming and does not necessarily deliver and test the
results that were expected. Studies have proven that students adopting
e-Learning methods are more likely to retain knowledge by some 60 –
70% as against traditional training methods. At Axtol we believe in blended
training where the traditional training is used for those subjects that
are very specialised and require a classroom scenario and e-Learning for
those subjects that are generic and that can be studied outside of a classroom.
Organisations deploying e-Learning quickly realise that it is possible
to train vast numbers of staff in a very short space of time by allowing
the individual to choose the time to train. And because it is up to the
Individual to choose his or her time they are able to choose a time that
they think they will be at their most receptive to training and that fits
in with busy work and social schedules.
A typical scenario of where an LMS will provide added value to an organisation
is for example within the retail market. Traditionally this has a high
turnover of staff and a constantly changing product line. A good LMS will
be able to provide the new member of staff with Induction training in
the company, health and safety and HR policies and Procedures. Further
training will be in the form of the product line. As new products are
marketed the training department should be able to put together a short
course within the LMS on the new product and release this to all staff
that require training in it. The employee will then login to the LMS,
run the course and perhaps take a test at the end to ensure that they
have mastered the product. To ensure that all employees have taken and
passed the course the reporting system will detail scores of individuals
and the date the course was taken. Utilising the LMS it is possible therefore
to get a product to market in an extremely short space of time whilst
at the same time ensuring that the sales force are fully briefed and able
to answer any queries a customer may raise.
Typically the advantages can be summarised as:
- Speed to market with new products.
- Ability to train all staff to the same level in a short space of
time.
- Reduced Training overheads – i.e. Travel, Hotel and Time Costs.
- Increased Job Satisfaction by employees due to greater understanding
and knowledge of products.
- Increased Sales due to better-trained and informed sales team.
- Ability to train staff in a wide variety of subjects utilising readily
available courseware.
